With the nation's economy struggling, the aristocratic Martin Van Buren became an easy target in the 1840 presidential campaign.  William Henry Harrison, the Whig standard-bearer, campaigned as a friend of the poor, born in a log cabin and the military hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe.
